WHEN YOU FIND A GREAT PASTOR…
When you find a great pastor, you also find a great pastor’s wife. This fact was highlighted for me recently when I attended two funerals in one week.
The first funeral was for Maxine Dean. Maxine was married to my Dad’s brother, Jack Dean. Uncle Jack was a Missionary Baptist pastor in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. In 1964, Jack and Maxine moved to Bowie, Maryland and planted Grace Baptist Church. They built a great church that continues to thrive today. Uncle Jack died much too young of a brain tumor more than 30 years ago, but Aunt Maxine continued through these years to be a vital part and leader at Grace Baptist.
Aunt Maxine was an amazing person. In addition to being an effective pastor’s wife, teaching Sunday School, and directing the church choir, she also worked for 32 years in the House of Representatives. During the memorial service, we heard many beautiful testimonies from family members and church members of the profound Christian influence of Aunt Maxine.
The second funeral was for Aleen Philpot, wife of Rev. Wallace Philpot. For 38 years, they very effectively served the Oak View Baptist Church in Irving. I have known Wallace for many of these years. He has served on every key position in Dallas Baptist Association including moderator of the association. Wallace has the highest respect by all of us in DBA.
I had met Aleen many years ago, but did not know her well until the last few years when we were in a group that played 42 dominoes once a month. I could see quickly what a great pastor’s wife she was and that fact was affirmed so well by the message at her funeral by Pastor Jim Gerlach. Jim served for many years on the staff at Oak View before becoming the pastor, so he spoke from his personal experience in describing the significant ministry and influence of Aleen.
As I thought about Maxine and Aleen, I was reminded of the truth that when you find a great pastor, you also find a great pastor’s wife. I have also experienced this in my own ministry. My wife, Ellen, is not only the love of my life and my best friend; she is also the best partner in ministry that I could ever have found. Praise the Lord for the significant influence of a pastor’s wife!
